Giving Tree Toy Appeal Continues a Legacy of Christmas Kindness

For over a century, Belfast Central Mission (BCM) has been supported by compassion and community spirit across Northern Ireland. A recently rediscovered photograph from 1903, preserved in BCM’s rich archive, captures Christmas volunteers gathering food parcels for families in need—a powerful reminder that the heart of such appeals has always been about those experiencing need.

That same spirit lives on today through BCM’s Giving Tree Toy Appeal, now in its 26th year in partnership with the Department for Communities.  Thousands of brand-new toys and gifts will be collected and distributed to children across Belfast and beyond, ensuring that families facing hardship can still experience the joy and magic of the season.

Nicky Conway, CEO of BCM, shares:

“Each year, we’re overwhelmed by the generosity of people across Northern Ireland who help us bring Christmas cheer to children who will otherwise go without. The Toy Appeal is a wonderful example of what happens when people come together from across churches, businesses, and government departments.”

The impact is real. Last Christmas, a single mother and her 9-year-old son moved from emergency accommodation into temporary housing just days before the holidays. With essentials ruined while in storage, buying gifts was out of reach. Thanks to the Toy Appeal, they received a toy bag filled with thoughtful items that made their Christmas special.

BCM works with over 50 partner organisations across Belfast and beyond to identify families most in need and ensure every donation reaches the right hands.  In 2024, the donation of toys, clothes and vouchers enabled BCM to provide nearly 2,000 children with a gift bag filled by volunteers with a main toy, novelty gifts, stationery, hats, scarves, clothes, crafts, books and more.
