Housing support

Housing

Introduction

One of the core foundations to any person’s wellbeing is having a secure and stable home.  BCM’s heart for housing support gravitates towards the youngest and oldest people from within our communities- those who are more likely to be excluded from opportunities to obtain or keep a safe, secure and warm place to call home.

Housing uncertainty can be a cause for great anxiety and isolation both for individuals and families. BCM’s Floating Support services are designed to offer personal advice, guidance and support to people with a housing need. This is a prevention-based service, acting on the principle that deeper crisis’ in people’s lives can be averted by taking small, proactive steps to protect wellbeing.

Housing Support for Younger People

BCM work with people aged 25 or under to help them prepare for and manage their homes as they start out. Our work is aligned with issues around affordability and financial poverty, with younger people often struggling to afford their own homes.

Our committed team members support the development of positive behaviours in self-care and healthier lifestyles. Making good decisions through planning, and managing mental and emotional wellbeing are also building blocks for sustainable tenancies.

We work to secure any benefits or wider support for the young person, liaising with local housing associations to ensure that tenancies are protected and that the young person thrives in managing what is often their first home.

Housing Support for Older People

Our older people’s teams work with people aged 55 or over who experience similar challenges in managing their home life.

Our main priority is to support our older people to remain living in their own homes for as long as possible. We will also support to navigate through the housing selection system to ultimately ensure that they secure a home that still supports their independence.

Help can include tangible changes such as home maintenance or improving energy efficiency and warmth. For our older residents who live alone, we also work to build connections and overcome social isolation through linking people to wider support or companionship. Often we work alongside people with complex situations, caused by a range of factors from bereavement, to ill health, and resultant debt.
