Short breaks for older people

The aim of the short breaks for odler people programme is to provide socially isolated older people with an opportunity to meet and mix with others. They also provide stimulation, fun and friendship at an affordable price.

"You're always made to feel very at home...  Every year you feel as though you're wanted. I love the holiday and having the company."

Since the 1950s BCM has been running holidays for over seventy 'older people' at BCM's Childhaven Centre in Millisle. Each holiday consisted of one week at Childhaven followed by reunions in the spring and autumn where friendships could be renewed. Beginning in the autumn of 2011 the holidays will be taking place at a new venue (Bangor's Marine Court Hotel) but will still include evening entertainment such as Old Time Dancing or musical groups. Volunteers are involved in the programme helping with the day to day activities and entertaining at night time.

Why do we run this project?

Many of those who attend feel socially isolated in their daily lives, particularly those with limited access to transport. A survey carried out by a large UK charity showed that:

  • 1998/9 17% of pensioners had income less than half the national average
  • ¼ of over 75's said they were more or less alone and socialise with very few people

The holidays provide socially isolated older people with an opportunity to meet and mix with others. They also provide stimulation, fun and friendship.  The short breaks are subsidised by BCM.

"The holidays are getting better every year. I enjoy every minute of it! There's never a dull moment”.
