Supporting those who need it most

19/06/2009 A good news story!

It’s been a tough year so far with so much talk of credit crunch and politician’s expenses. So, in an effort to lift the mood a little, we have decided to focus on what is good and positive.

There are many good things about being connected with BCM in whatever capacity. Not least of these is the privilege of being part of a team which is clearly focused on helping others. Our volunteers are an integral part of that team and vital to much of the support we aim to provide.

What is volunteering? One definition is:

Volunteering is about giving your time to partake in activities that benefit others.

Since 1889 the BCM volunteers have been supporting the work of the Mission through many and varied roles. We currently have 140 volunteers which includes those who help out at our traditional Christmas Eve street collection. Within that larger group is a core group of around thirty (see photo) who are called upon throughout the year to help in all sorts of ways e.g. providing entertainment at holidays for older people; large mailings; mentoring or befriending; Wednesday Lunch Club; minibus driving; Tea Dances.

In Kirk House Residential Home our volunteers befriend, play the piano, organise carpet bowling, shopping trips & hospital appointments.

In the year Jan - Dec 2008 the BCM volunteers gave 12,650 hours to BCM.

The donation of their free time is a gift which they have given freely and gladly. Now that IS good news! Thank you to each volunteer, both past and present.
