Supporting those who need it most
Volunteering
From BCM's foundation in 1889, volunteers have played a vital role in the life of the Mission and this remains true today. In fact this is an expanding area of our work and the contribution made by our volunteers has been calculated as an amazing 11,760 volunteering hours in the year Jan - Dec 2007 alone.
In spring 1999, BCM had just over twenty volunteers. Just nine years later that number has risen to 143 volunteers who donate their time and energy to the Mission's work. They range from teenagers to older people, and perform various roles including driving the mini-bus, helping with the administration of the annual appeals, distributing the food parcels and toys at Christmas and organising the children's holidays. BCM also runs a befriending scheme for older people and a mentoring scheme for young people.
The diversity of the work carried out by the BCM volunteers throughout the years and their dedication was recently acknowledged when they received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service 2005.
"Voluntary work in the (Grosvenor) Hall just seems as natural to us as breathing. We do it because we want to and because we know that God wants us and needs us to do our little part"
